The South East has more veterans than any other region. Aldershot is known as the home of the British Army, Portsmouth is home port to much of the Royal Navy fleet, and Gosport has the highest proportion of veterans of any local authority in England and Wales. Many people settle near where they last served, so the region has a deep pool of veteran-run businesses, from engineering and defence suppliers to builders, coaches and security companies.

The 2021 Census recorded 317,082 veterans in the South East (4.2% of residents aged 16 and over), the largest number of any English region. In Gosport the proportion was 12.5%. Source: Census 2021 table TS071, Previously served in the UK armed forces — ONS via Nomis
